Perspectives on Therapeutic Change
This course was presented in March and April 2008
Presenter: Maryann Conigliaro VandeLoo, Ph.D.
Tuesdays: March 11, 18, 25, April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, 2008
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
DESCRIPTION
This course will discuss therapeutic action in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. What brings about curative change for an individual in psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis? The course's historical perspective begins with Freud's (1914) paper that focuses on interpretation and insight, and Strachey's (1934) discussion about intrapsychic structural change. Later writings about therapeutic action discuss the significant shift towards interpersonal/interactional and object relational dimensions in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Emphasis will be on recent psychoanalytic literature on therapeutic action, from diverse contemporary theoretical perspectives - including contemporary ego-psychological, interpersonal, object relational, self-psychological / intersubjective, and relational perspectives.
Participants' comments and questions about the weekly readings are welcome for our seminar discussions. Participants are encouraged to integrate their reading with their clinical work experiences. It is hoped that this seminar will help participants formulate their own thinking about the important topic of therapeutic action in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.
