The Leaders We Need and What Makes Us Follow

The Faculty and Clinical Council of the Washington School of Psychiatry invites our professional and gold members to our first membership event which will feature Dr. Michael Maccoby sharing insights from his latest book, The Leaders We Need and What Makes Us Follow.

Dr. Maccoby's presentation will help clinicians understand how new, emotionally rooted attitudes are emerging as an adaptation to the modern workplace and the type of leaders we need to bring out the best in this new character constellation. It will also help clinicians understand the changing modern workplace.

Dr. Maccoby's insights come from 45 years of research, teaching, and consulting. He facilitated a national health care coalition, and directed foundation-funded research on exemplary health care systems. He advises diverse leaders and organizations, being trusted by both corporate and union leaders.

Dr. Maccoby's presentation will be followed by a panel discussion which will focus on the challenges of leadership within the Washington School. The panelists will be Mauricio Cortina, M.D., FCC Membership Committee Chair, Michael Stiers, Ph.D, Executive Director of the WSP, and Barbara Wayne, Ph.D., Chair of the Board of Directors of the WSP.

OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:

  1. Compare different leadership styles.
  2. Describe variables that influence others to follow.
  3. Discuss challenges that leaders and followers face in the modern workplace.

PRESENTER

Michael Maccoby is a globally recognized expert on leadership who for 35 years has advised leaders in businesses, governments, unions and universities. He is president of the Maccoby Group in Washington, D.C. and has a PhD from Harvard University, where he directed the Program on Technology, Public Policy and Human Development from 1978-90. He was a training analyst at The Mexican Institute of Psychoanalysis where he studied under Erich Fromm and with him wrote Social Character in Mexican Village. He is author of The Gamesman, The Leader, Sweden at the Edge, Why Work? and The Leaders We Need and What Makes Us Follow. He is a fellow of the American Psychological and Anthropological Associations and the National Academy of Public Administration. He teaches leadership at the Brookings Institution and Oxford University's Said School of Business and is a founding member of the Advanced Psychotherapy Training Program at the Washington School of Psychiatry.

The Washington School of Psychiatry is approved by the American Psychological Association to provide continuing education for psychologists. The Washington School maintains responsibility for the program. The School is approved by the Social Work Board of the State of Maryland as a provider of continuing education for social workers. The School is approved by the Medical Society of Maryland (MEDCHI) for continuing education for psychiatrists.
