LOVE AS A SYMPTOM

This program was presented on March 31, 2008

Presenter: Colette Soler, Ph.D.

Monday, March 31, 2008 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM

INTRODUCTION

What is love? Religion, philosophy, and literature have all tried to answer the question of its mystery. Psychoanalysis-from Freud to Lacan-brings something new.

Colette Soler, a founding member of the International Forums of the Lacanian field, will open the question of how to understand love in the psychoanalytic clinic.

Is love an illness? Is love a madness? No. Its mystery-far from being ineffable-is caused by the unconscious, by the denaturing of sex that is specific to the speaking being.

Soler will clarify Lacan's famous formula "there is no such thing as a sexual relationship" and show that the deficiencies in what we call "romantic life" are what make love thrive.

OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain what Lacan meant when he said: "there is no such thing as a sexual relationship."
  2. Assess symptoms from the perspective of the Lacanian clinic.
  3. Apply an approach to working with patients based on this new understanding.
