Ethics Workshop: Practical Ethics for Psychodynamic Clinicians
This workshop was presented on October 28, 2007
Presenter: Richard Ruth, PhD
October 28, 2007
Becoming grounded in a deep sense of ethics is simultaneously a heartfelt desire, a complex challenge, and an unambiguous necessity for therapists working in the psychoanalytic and psychodynamic traditions (and all clinicians). The ethics codes under which we are obligated to practice seem to come mostly from outside inside the dynamics of therapeutic work, and can feel like an ill-fitting garment. While few would argue that, in our litigious age, we can afford to practice "above" legal and ethical imperatives, few practicing clinicians, at least in our candid moments, pretend that it is easy.
This day-long workshop will begin with a presentation on how to think about and apply ethics-code demands in the real-world contexts in which private-practice and agency-based therapists operate. Facilitated small-group discussions will then work through ethical dilemmas that clinicians in our community commonly face in day-to-day practice. A concluding large group discussion will sum up some of the learnings and open questions emerging from the day.
Workshop attendance is open to all mental health professionals, regardless of discipline or theoretical orientation; graduate students in the mental health professions; and interested members of the community. This workshop meets requirements for social workers and psychologists for 6 hours of continuing education in law and ethics. To receive credit, participants must attend the entire workshop.
