The Adele Lebowitz Center for Youth & Families offers
families in the Washington, DC metropolitan area with a full spectrum of mental
health services provided by a dedicated, interdisciplinary staff experienced in
the issues confronting children, adolescents, and their families. Since the
problems in a child’s life may be compounded by many factors, treatment of a
child involves coordination of the child’s family, school, and community. The
Center emphasizes a team approach to treatment involving thoughtful reflection
and collaboration among clinicians. Through weekly dialogue in clinical team
meetings and at other times as needed, clinicians seeing a child and his/her
parents work closely together. Decisions about medication and psychological
testing are made as part of a process of consultation with families and the
treatment team, including therapists, psychiatrists, and psychologists. When
appropriate, clinicians are in touch with school personnel as well as other
important people in the child’s life. Decisions about the best treatment plan
are made as part of an initial evaluation, and are reassessed throughout the
treatment process. Treatment options may include individual therapy, parent
consultation, family therapy, and group therapy. Psychological and
psychoeducational testing
are also available.
As part of the Center’s commitment to offer services to a
broad strata of the community, fees are based on a sliding scale so that access
to mental health services is not impeded by financial constraints. Lebowitz
Center clinicians are experienced in working with a diverse clientele and with a
broad range of clinical issues. Each child and family is viewed as unique and
offered individualized care, and all families receive thoughtful, responsive
care regardless of ability to pay, background, issues, or needs.
The Lebowitz Center, together with the Eugene Meyer III Treatment Center
which provides mental health services to adults, are the clinical arms of the
Washington School of Psychiatry. The team approach that characterizes the work
of the Lebowitz Center also extends to the close association of the clinics and
their participation within the organization. WSP’s ongoing training programs and
its tradition of innovation and intellectual rigor provide a climate of
intellectual growth and stimulation that supports the high quality of care
offered to patients. Most Lebowitz Center clinicians are graduates of one or
more of the School’s advanced post-graduate clinical training programs, and all
have received specialized training in the treatment of children and families.
Moreover, through regular involvement in a variety of training and staff
development activities, clinicians actively refine their thinking and skills as
they participate in a larger dialogue about state of the art developments in the
field.
