Group Psychotherapy, Start To Finish

Introduction

This one day workshop is open to all clinicians, but especially those who:

  • Have considered adding group therapy to their practices
  • Are interested in sorting out the nuts and bolts of group treatment
  • Have encountered problems in leading groups
  • Have never been a patient in a psychotherapy group
  • Are reluctant to refer patients for group treatment

The workshop's focus will be on clinical techniques and other considerations in group work through didactic and experiential learning. Participants will learn, via talks, discussion, and through a demonstration group, the basics of starting and maintaining psychotherapy groups.

Objectives

This workshop is designed to help participants

  1. Plan and initiate a psychotherapy group
  2. Assess patients' suitability for group therapy
  3. Address typical difficulties in the early phase of a group's life
  4. Utilize the therapeutic factors that make for effective group treatment
  5. Manage terminations, appropriate and otherwise

Presenter

Bea Liebenberg, MSW, CGP is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, an honor bestowed on her in recognition of her long and outstanding career as a teacher, supervisor, presenter and writer on the subject of group work. She is also a charter faculty member of the Washington School of Psychiatry's National Group Psychotherapy Institute, and has taught, trained and supervised students in the School's Advanced Psychotherapy Training program.

The Washington School of Psychiatry is approved by the American Psychological Association to provide continuing education for psychologists. The Washington School maintains responsibility for the program. The School is approved by the Social Work Board of the State of Maryland as a provider of continuing education for social workers. The School is approved by the Medical Society of Maryland (MEDCHI) for continuing education for psychiatrists.
