Practical Ethics for Psychodynamic Clinicians
This program was presented on June 8, 2008
Sunday, June 8, 2008 9:30 AM–5:00 PM
This day of ethics training is part of a twice yearly series at the Washington School of Psychiatry. In the challenging contemporary climate in which we work, clinicians face ethical dilemmas all the time, yet time, space, orienting principles, and a meaningful process for resolving concerns in this area of practice can feel in short supply. By sustaining a dialogue about ethics, we hope to counterpose the possibility of an ethically engaged community of professionals with the often alienating experience of sorting through confusing, and sometimes conflicting, ethical mandates alone.
The day will begin with a review of the underlying principles of the ethics codes in the mental health professions, and a framework for thinking about how to practice ethically. We will then work through, in small groups, a set of scenarios local professionals have faced in their own practices, and summarize our learning - and open questions - in a large group format. The day will conclude with a final small-group session in which participants will frame their on-going ethics learning needs, and a plan for how to meet them.
In the Washington School tradition, this training is open to all mental health professionals, and professionals-in-training, and will be enriched by interdisciplinary dialogue. Along similar lines, while the School is grounded in the psychodynamic tradition, we welcome colleagues from diverse theoretical orientations and practice settings who value a collegial environment in which we can connect and learn from each other.
This workshop meets requirements for social workers and psychologists for 6 hours of continuing education in law and ethics. To receive credit, participants must attend the entire workshop.
OBJECTIVES
- Attendees will learn ethical principles that can guide effective solutions to two ethical problems commonly faced by psychodynamic clinicians in contemporary clinical practice.
- Attendees will identify two ethical conflicts likely to arise in teaching and learning psychotherapy, and a framework in which they can be resolved.
- Attendees will identify one personal need for further ethics learning and develop a plan to address it.
