Basic Principles of Group Psychotherapy
The Core Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course is modeled on the Core Course of Group Psychotherapy designed by the American Group Psychotherapy Association. Upon its completion, participants will have met the core course requirement of the National Registry of Certified Group Psychotherapy. Class discussion will include a didactic component, utilizing the clinical experiences of participants. Active engagement in these discussions is expected. There will be assigned reading and four brief writing assignments.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the five areas of group psychotherapy principles as defined by the American Group Psychotherapy Association and the National Registry of Certified Group Psychotherapists.
  2. Apply these principles to clinical situations in groups they conduct or may conduct in the future.
  3. Critically examine specific problems in the conduct of group psychotherapy.

This course is intended for any interested practitioner of group therapy regardless of professional discipline. Nonclinicians with an interest in group process may apply and be considered on a case-by-case basis.

FACULTY

George Saiger, MD is a Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association and is certified by the National Registry of Group Psychotherapists. He is a past president of the MidAtlantic Group Psychotherapy Society and has been on the faculty of the group program at the Washington School of Psychiatry since 1979.

CE/CME Award -12 hours

The Washington School of Psychiatry is approved by the American Psychological Association to provide continuing education for psychologists. The Washington School maintains responsibility for the program. The School is approved by the Social Work Board of the State of Maryland as a provider of continuing education for social workers. The School is approved by the Medical Society of Maryland (MEDCHI) for continuing education for psychiatrists.
