PRESENTS

attachment theory and ester bick's method of mother-infant observation:  The melding of two traditions of infant observation

Presenter:  Sonia Gojman de Millan PH.D.

Saturday, March 13, 2010

9:30 AM–5:00 PM

The workshop is designed to help participants understand how attachment research methods that capture important aspects of mother-infant interaction and mother’s state of mind, and Bick’s clinical method of mother-infant observation can enrich each other.   Using specific examples, we will show how these two approaches are used to train psychotherapists.  We will also demonstrate the impressive coherence that is achieved by combining Beck’s semi-clinical approach with attachment research methods.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The workshop is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, licensed professional counselors, physicians, medical students and other graduate students.

Objectives

After attending the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the two approaches to mother-infant observation.

  2. Compare the strengths and limitation of each approach.

  3. Show how the two methods tap into different but congruent intersubjective processes in clinicians and researchers.
